- アラン・メンケン
1949年7月22日 アメリカ合衆国ニューヨーク州に生まれる。父親は歯科医師でユダヤ系ベラルーシ人移民。
少年時代からクラシック音楽を学び、大学を卒業後、舞台音楽の作曲家を目指す。
1979年 最初のミュージカル『w:God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater』（カート・ヴォネガットの長編小説『ローズウォーターさん、あなたに神のお恵みを』の改作）を上演するが、興行的には失敗。
1982年 ミュージカル『リトル・ショップ・オブ・ホラーズ』（1960年公開の同名の映画を元にしたミュージカル作品）で脚光を浴びる。
1986年 『リトル・ショップ・オブ・ホラーズ』が（再）映画化される。アラン・メンケン作曲の主題歌「Mean Green Mother From Outer Space」がアカデミー歌曲賞にノミネートされる。
1989年 『リトル・マーメイド』の音楽を手がける。本作の楽曲、主題歌はアカデミー作曲賞、アカデミー歌曲賞、ゴールデングローブ賞 作曲賞、ゴールデングローブ賞 主題歌賞を受賞した。
以降、ディズニー映画の楽曲、主題歌を多数手がけ、ディズニー・ルネサンスの立役者のひとりとなった。映画のみならず、シンドバッド・ストーリーブック・ヴォヤッジなどディズニーパークのアトラクション向けの曲なども提供している。
